UAE launches $100 mn project for Pakistan's flood hit

Dubai News.Net Thursday 13th January, 2011

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Thursday launched a $100 million project for assisting Pakistan's flood affected people.

The project, which will help in reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by last year's devastating floods, was launched in Islamabad by UAE's Ambassador to Pakistan Ali Saif Al Awani Owais Ahmed Ghani.

The floods that started in July 2010 killed around 1,700 people and affected more than 20 million. The overall economic loss was estimated at around $9.5 billion.

The project would create job opportunities in the flood-hit areas. It will focus on four major sectors - education, public health, roads and bridges.

It would focus on rebuilding a number of hospitals and health clinics and establish a new nursing institute. Water purification and water resource management stations would also be built as part of the project.
