Prohibited items including drugs seized during mail screening exercise

DARWIN, Northern Territory, Australia - A crackdown on the sending of illicit substances and other illegal items through the post took place in the Northern Territory of Australia this week.

Three days of mail screening at a Darwin mail distribution centre have resulted in a number of items, including drugs and prohibited weapons, being seized.

The operation was carried out by the Northern Territory Joint Organised Crime Task Force and Northern Territory Police Drug and Organised Crime Section, along with the Australian Border Force and Australian Federal Police.

Approximately 8,500 parcels were screened, which which resulted in 7 grams of heroin, 10 grams of methamphetamine, 100 grams of cannabis plant material, 10 grams of cannabis seeds, 100 grams of synthetic cannabis, 1.8 kilograms of kava, Illegal steroids (20ml of liquid and 100 tablets), various unauthorised prescription medication, prohibited weapons (flick knives, knuckle dusters, M4 replica machine gun and throwing knives), and Ice pipes were seized, resulting in thirty nine seizure notices being issued.

The heroin, cannabis plant material, resin and methamphetamine were referred to Nthe orthern Territory Police Drug and Organised Crime Section for further investigation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Sanderson said she believes the work they are doing is producing results.

"We are continuing to screen for illicit substances and other items that are being sent through the post," she said Friday.

"The amount of drugs seized is substantially less than past screenings and we believe these operations are having a positive impact in terms of preventing and disrupting the supply of drugs to Darwin."
